About Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal

Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal is a state ecological conservation zone in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas of southern Mexico, protecting a ridge system in the Pacific-facing highlands between the municipalities of Villaflores and La Concordia. The zone lies at elevations between approximately 1,200 and 2,400 meters above sea level and encompasses remnant cloud forest, montane rainforest, and pine-oak woodland on the Pacific slope of the Sierra Madre. The reserve was established to protect one of the most critically reduced forest types in Mexico — the cloud forest of the Pacific slope of Chiapas — which supports extraordinary biodiversity and provides vital watershed services for agricultural communities on the Grijalva plain below.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The reserve harbors a rich assemblage of wildlife characteristic of Mesoamerican highland and cloud forest habitats. Spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) inhabit intact forest patches, representing regionally significant populations for these threatened primates. Pumas (Puma concolor) and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) are the apex predators of the reserve. The avifauna is particularly diverse, with resplendent quetzals (Pharomachrus mocinno) documented in cloud forest zones — a flagship species indicating intact habitat quality. Azure-rumped tanager (Tangara cabanisi), a globally threatened endemic, has been recorded in the conservation zone. Tepescuintles (Cuniculus paca) and white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) are among the more commonly observed mammals.

Flora Ecosystems

Cloud forest and montane rainforest vegetation dominates the reserve's higher elevations, characterized by trees festooned with mosses, bromeliads, orchids, and ferns adapted to the near-perpetual mist and high rainfall. Canopy trees include oaks (Quercus spp.), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and Magnolia species. Tree ferns (Cyathea spp.) are conspicuous understory elements. Below the cloud forest zone, pine-oak woodland and lower montane forest contain pine species including Pinus oocarpa and Pinus maximinoi. The Pacific slope of the Chiapas Sierra Madre is a global center of plant diversity and endemism, with numerous species restricted to this narrow belt of highland habitat. Epiphytic orchid diversity is exceptional, with dozens of species recorded.

Geology

The Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal lies on the Pacific-facing flank of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, which is a fault-bounded range of pre-Mesozoic metamorphic and igneous basement rocks overlain by Paleozoic schists, gneisses, and granites. The range was uplifted during Tertiary tectonic compression associated with the collision and subduction of the Cocos plate under the North American plate. The mountainous terrain is dissected by deep river valleys and quebradas carved by the upper tributaries of the Grijalva River system. Frequent earthquakes in this seismically active region cause landslides that periodically open the forest canopy, creating disturbed patches that support diverse successional plant communities.

Climate And Weather

The conservation zone experiences an extremely wet montane climate driven by moist air masses rising from the Pacific and Gulf of Tehuantepec. Annual rainfall at cloud forest elevations typically exceeds 3,000 mm, concentrated in a long wet season from May through November. The cloud forest is enveloped in fog and mist for much of the year, even during drier months. Temperatures at upper elevations range from 8–20°C, significantly cooler than the lowland plains below. Frost can occur at the highest points during cold fronts (nortes) that affect the region from November through February. The climatic conditions create a mosaic of perpetually moist habitats that support the exceptional plant diversity for which this landscape is known.

Human History

The highlands of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas were inhabited by indigenous Zoque and Tzotzil Maya peoples long before Spanish colonization, who cultivated terraced hillsides and practiced agroforestry in the montane environment. Colonial-era land grants concentrated lowland areas in the hands of large ranching and agricultural estates, while indigenous communities retained access to highland forest areas. The twentieth century brought significant demographic pressure through population growth and land redistribution, driving agricultural clearing upslope into what had been intact cloud forest. Coffee cultivation was introduced in the mid-Pacific slope as a relatively forest-compatible crop that has provided livelihoods while maintaining some shade-tree cover on formerly cleared slopes.

Park History

Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal was designated as an ecological conservation zone by the government of Chiapas to protect a critical remnant of Pacific-slope cloud forest in a landscape that had experienced severe forest loss during the twentieth century. The designation aligned with broader state and federal efforts to safeguard the remaining cloud forests of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, which are among the most threatened ecosystems in Mexico due to conversion for agriculture and pastoralism. The conservation zone is managed in coordination with CONANP, which oversees the adjacent and ecologically linked El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. Buffer zone strategies and community environmental services payments have been implemented to reduce deforestation pressure.

Major Trails And Attractions

The reserve offers hiking opportunities through spectacular cloud forest and montane environments accessible from the towns of Villaflores and La Concordia in the Grijalva lowlands. Trails ascend through altitudinal vegetation zones from lower montane forest into cloud forest, offering outstanding birdwatching for quetzals, trogons, cotingas, and highland hummingbirds. The ecological links with El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve mean that visitors to Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal can experience a similar wilderness quality while accessing an area closer to main roads. Guided tours with local naturalists are available from Villaflores, providing the best access to wildlife and ensuring visitors navigate the complex trail system safely.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Access to Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal is primarily from Villaflores or La Concordia, both reachable by road from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Chiapas state capital, approximately 80–100 km to the north. Tuxtla Gutiérrez is served by Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport (TGZ) with connections to Mexico City. Visitor infrastructure within the conservation zone is minimal; trail access generally requires local guides familiar with the terrain. Accommodation and services are available in Villaflores, which has small hotels, restaurants, and markets. The high-rainfall environment means trails can be extremely muddy; waterproof footwear and gear are essential. The dry season months of December through April offer more comfortable hiking conditions.

Conservation And Sustainability

The primary conservation threats to Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal are deforestation for cattle pasture and small-scale milpa agriculture, which continues to reduce and fragment cloud forest patches. The reserve forms part of an important biological corridor connecting El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve with other highland protected areas, making connectivity maintenance critical for species like quetzal and spider monkey that require large home ranges. Payment for ecosystem services (PES) programs operated by CONANP and the Chiapas state government provide economic incentives for landowners to maintain forest cover. Climate change poses a long-term threat as cloud forest zones are projected to shift upslope with warming, potentially eliminating habitat at the highest elevations available within the reserve.
