Shikotsu-Toya National Park protects 99,473 hectares of spectacular volcanic landscapes in southwestern Hokkaido. The park was established in 1949 as one of Japan's first national parks, though the area's volcanic landscape has been revered since ancient times by the indigenous Ainu people who considered it sacred ground. The name combines two of its major lakes - Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya - both formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The region has experienced several significant volcanic events, including the 2000 eruption of Mount Usu, which led to the evacuation of thousands of residents but also created new geological features that attract researchers and tourists alike.

Recognition of the region outstanding volcanic landscapes led to designation as Shikotsu-Toya National Park on May 16, 1949. The park volcanic heritage gained international recognition when designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2009.
