About Schlern-Rosengarten

Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park protects 7,291 hectares of iconic Dolomite landscape in South Tyrol, featuring the distinctive flat-topped Schlern massif and the jagged Rosengarten (Catinaccio) peaks. Established in 1974 as South Tyrol's first nature park, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The park is famed for the Alpenglow phenomenon where the Rosengarten towers glow deep rose-red at sunset, inspiring the local Ladin legend of King Laurin's enchanted rose garden.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park supports characteristic Dolomite alpine fauna across its elevation range of 880 to 2,981 meters. Golden eagles nest on remote cliff ledges and hunt over the alpine plateaus. Chamois navigate the steep terrain below the rock walls, while marmots inhabit the high meadows of the Schlern plateau. The forests shelter roe deer, mountain hare, and red squirrels. Black grouse perform their courtship displays at the treeline in spring. The rare wallcreeper frequents the vertical limestone faces, and alpine salamanders occur in humid rocky habitats.

Flora Ecosystems

The park's flora is exceptionally rich due to the calcareous Dolomite substrate and varied aspects creating diverse microclimates. Alpine meadows on the Schlern plateau host an extraordinary diversity of wildflowers including devil's claw, alpine columbine, and numerous orchid species. The Nigra Lake area features rare bog vegetation. Lower elevations support mixed forests of spruce, larch, and Swiss stone pine, with ancient specimens in protected locations. The rocky terrain above 2,500 meters supports cushion plants and specialized Dolomite endemics adapted to limestone scree.

Geology

The park showcases some of the most spectacular geological formations in the Dolomites. The Schlern massif is a massive platform of Schlern Dolomite, representing an ancient Triassic reef system that grew in tropical seas approximately 240 million years ago. The Rosengarten group displays dramatic vertical walls of pale Dolomite limestone rising above darker volcanic basement rocks. The contact between these formations records ancient volcanic activity contemporary with reef growth. Glacial erosion during the ice ages carved the cirques and valleys that frame these massive rock structures.

Climate And Weather

The park experiences a continental alpine climate with cold winters and moderate summers. Temperatures on the Schlern plateau average around minus 6 degrees Celsius in January and 12 degrees in July. The park's inner-alpine position results in lower precipitation than the outer Alps, averaging 700-1,000 millimeters annually. Snow covers higher elevations from November through May. The famous Alpenglow on the Rosengarten faces occurs when the low-angle sun of dawn or dusk illuminates the pale Dolomite, creating vivid color effects enhanced by atmospheric conditions.

Human History

The area around the Schlern has been settled since the Mesolithic period, with hunters following game into the high valleys. The Ladin people maintained their Romance language and pastoral culture in the surrounding valleys. The Schlern plateau served as summer grazing land for centuries, and the routes across the mountain passes connected communities in different valleys. Legends of King Laurin and his rose garden have been told since medieval times, explaining the Alpenglow. The peaks attracted early alpinists in the 19th century, with Christomannos developing tourism in the Rosengarten.

Park History

Schlern-Rosengarten was established in 1974 as South Tyrol's first nature park, reflecting the area's iconic status in the regional landscape and culture. The park was later included in the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site 'The Dolomites' in 2009. Initial management focused on resolving conflicts between conservation and existing alpine farming and tourism uses. The park has since developed into a model for Dolomite conservation, balancing strict habitat protection with sustainable recreation and cultural landscape maintenance.

Major Trails And Attractions

The traverse of the Schlern plateau via the Schlern Houses offers panoramic views across the western Dolomites to the Ortler group. The Rosengarten Circuit (Catinaccio tour) is a multi-day trek beneath dramatic vertical walls, connecting the Vajolet Towers with several mountain huts. The Tschafon peak provides accessible summit views. Lake Völser Weiher at the park's western entrance offers a gentler introduction with Schlern views reflected in its waters. Via ferrata routes on the Rosengarten towers attract experienced climbers.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessible from multiple directions: Völs am Schlern and Seis am Schlern from the west, Tiers from the south, and the Seiser Alm cable car from Kastelruth. The nearest cities are Bolzano (20 km) and Innsbruck (120 km). Mountain huts including Schlernhaus, Tierser Alpl, Vajolet Hut, and Alberto I provide summer accommodation. The park's information center in Seis am Schlern offers geological and natural history exhibitions. Winter access is limited to ski touring routes as the park lies outside groomed ski areas.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park's UNESCO status requires strict protection of geological features and natural processes. Management challenges include high visitor pressure during summer months, particularly on popular trails, addressed through information campaigns promoting lesser-known routes. Alpine meadow conservation supports traditional grazing to maintain floristic diversity that would decline under natural reforestation. Climate change monitoring tracks shifts in vegetation zones and snow cover duration. The park participates in Dolomite-wide coordination for consistent conservation standards across the UNESCO site's nine component areas.
