About Puurijärvi-Isosuo

Puurijärvi-Isosuo National Park protects a paired lake and mire complex in the Satakunta region of southwestern Finland, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Pori. Established in 1993, the park covers about 27 square kilometres combining the shallow, eutrophic Lake Puurijärvi with the adjacent Isosuo raised bog. This combination creates exceptional habitat diversity in a compact area—a shallow bird lake fringed by reed beds, surrounded by intact raised mire, and bordered by boreal forest. The park is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and serves as one of the most important waterbird breeding and staging sites in western Finland.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Puurijärvi is one of Finland's most important wetland areas for nesting and migrating waterbirds. Whooper swan, tufted duck, goldeneye, and teal nest in the reed bed margins, while the lake supports staging flocks of thousands of bean geese and white-fronted geese during spring migration. Great bittern has bred in the reed beds—an extremely rare occurrence in Finland. Black stork, osprey, and white-tailed eagle feed on the lake throughout summer. The otter is present along the lake shore. The open bog of Isosuo is a breeding ground for golden plover, crane, and curlew, with the crane population particularly notable.

Flora Ecosystems

Lake Puurijärvi is one of western Finland's finest examples of a eutrophic bird lake, with extensive stands of common reed, lesser bulrush, and yellow iris around the margins. Floating-leaved vegetation including yellow water-lily and white water-lily covers large areas of the shallow lake surface. The adjacent Isosuo mire is a well-developed raised bog with Sphagnum mosses, hare's-tail cottongrass, bog rosemary, marsh Labrador tea, and sundew across the open bog surface. Bog pools and bare peat flats punctuate the bog surface. The forest margins between lake and mire include alder carr and mixed boreal woodland.

Geology

The park occupies a lowland basin in the agricultural plain of Satakunta, underlain by Precambrian metamorphic rocks buried beneath thick glacial sediments. Lake Puurijärvi is a shallow lake created by poor drainage in a topographic depression, with peat accumulating at its margins over millennia. The lake is actively infilling with organic sediment as aquatic vegetation encroaches from the shores. The Isosuo bog has accumulated peat to depths of several metres above the mineral soil. Post-glacial land uplift has gradually altered drainage patterns in the region, affecting the boundary between lake and mire ecosystems.

Climate And Weather

The park has a mild maritime-influenced climate typical of southwestern Finland. Winters are relatively mild compared to inland and northern Finland, with January means around -6°C and snow cover that can be intermittent in mild years. The proximity to the Bothnian coast moderates temperature extremes. Summers are warm, with July averages around 17°C. Autumn and spring migrations through the park are driven by weather patterns over the Baltic, with southwesterly winds concentrating migrants at the lake. Late summer algal blooms can develop on the shallow, nutrient-rich lake in warm years.

Human History

Lake Puurijärvi and its surroundings have been used by human communities for thousands of years, as evidenced by Stone Age dwelling sites and fish trap structures documented in the area. The lake has been a productive freshwater fishery throughout recorded history. The surrounding Satakunta plain was extensively farmed from the medieval period, and drainage of wetlands for agricultural use reduced the region's mire area dramatically during the twentieth century. The survival of Isosuo as an intact mire is partly due to its unfavourable terrain for drainage operations. The lake was historically managed for waterfowl hunting.

Park History

Puurijärvi-Isosuo National Park was established in 1993 as part of a national programme to protect representative wetland ecosystems across Finland. The park was included on the Ramsar Convention list of internationally important wetlands, recognising the lake's significance for migratory and breeding waterbirds. Metsähallitus manages the park with an emphasis on maintaining favourable conditions for nesting waterbirds, including vegetation management in the reed beds. Water level management on Lake Puurijärvi has been an ongoing management challenge, with the lake gradually infilling and the reed bed expanding at the expense of open water.

Major Trails And Attractions

The park's main visitor infrastructure consists of a network of marked trails and birdwatching towers around Lake Puurijärvi. The main car park and information board at Rautaperä provide the starting point for a 7-kilometre trail circuit around the lake. Three elevated birdwatching towers overlook key areas of the lake, providing excellent observation of breeding and migrating waterbirds. Crane and whooper swan are the most spectacular species to observe from the towers in spring and autumn. A boardwalk section crosses mire habitat adjacent to the lake. The park is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers from April through June and August through October.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessible by car from Kokemäki, about 8 kilometres away, which has train connections from Tampere and Pori. Metsähallitus maintains parking areas, trail markers, and birdwatching towers but no staffed visitor centre; information boards at the trailhead provide maps and species lists. Lean-to shelter and campfire facilities are available for day visitors. Accommodation is available in Kokemäki and Pori. The park is open year-round, with the best birdwatching in spring and autumn. Bird ringing activities are conducted regularly by local ornithological societies.

Conservation And Sustainability

Lake Puurijärvi's conservation depends on maintaining appropriate water levels and preventing further eutrophication from the surrounding agricultural catchment. Nutrient runoff from farms contributes to algal blooms and accelerates the reed bed expansion that reduces open water habitat for diving ducks. Metsähallitus periodically clears sections of reed beds to maintain open water conditions. The raised bog Isosuo requires protection of its hydrology; drainage ditches on the bog margins are monitored and blocked where feasible. Climate change is expected to reduce winter frost periods, potentially allowing more vigorous reed growth and accelerating lake succession.
