National Wildlife Area - British Columbia, Canada
Just 50km south of Vancouver, this 349-hectare protected area forms part of the Fraser River Delta ecosystem, one of the Pacific Coast's most important bird habitats. The site attracts up to 1.4 million migratory birds annually, including over 25,000 lesser snow geese beginning in October. Open for day-use Monday through Friday 8am-3pm (excluding holidays), visitors can walk flat gravel trails including the 40-minute Sunnyside Trail and 30-minute Triangle Loop. Facilities include parking and washrooms. The wildlife area overlaps with George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where interpretive programming is available. Designated as part of the Fraser River Delta Ramsar Site, Alaksen offers excellent opportunities for trail walking, wildlife viewing, and nature photography. Fifteen species at risk call this area home, making it essential habitat for conservation and a rewarding destination for eco-tourists.
