About Kundelungu

Kundelungu National Park, established in 1970, lies in the Haut-Katanga Province of southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the Kundelungu Plateau at elevations of 1,000–1,500 metres. Covering approximately 7,600 square kilometres, the park encompasses a vast highland plateau of miombo woodland, grassland, and gallery forest, bisected by the headwaters of the Lufira River and its tributaries. The park is relatively little-known internationally but holds significant biological importance as part of the Congolian miombo belt, and protects the spectacular Lofoi Falls—at 384 metres, considered one of Africa's highest waterfalls—within its boundaries.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Kundelungu supports a savanna and woodland fauna typical of the miombo zone of central Africa. Buffalo, waterbuck, roan antelope, sable antelope, and hartebeest historically occurred in large numbers. Elephants range through the park, though their numbers have been reduced by poaching. Leopards and lions are present but at low densities. The Lufira River system holds hippopotamus. The park's plateau grasslands provide habitat for oribi, reedbuck, and duiker species. The gallery forests along rivers harbour baboons, vervet monkeys, and various forest birds. The miombo woodland supports a diverse avifauna, including numerous species characteristic of the Zambia-Malawi-Zimbabwe bird zone.

Flora Ecosystems

Kundelungu's vegetation is dominated by miombo woodland—a distinctive central African woodland type characterised by Brachystegia and Julbernardia trees, which have a remarkable synchronised leafing flush in the dry season, turning bronze and copper before flushing new leaves. Open dambo grasslands (seasonally waterlogged depressions) cut through the miombo, creating habitat diversity. The plateau edge and escarpments have gallery forests of tall trees following the drainage lines. Permanently wet areas support papyrus and reed communities. The miombo woodland contains numerous plant species endemic to the Zambezian biogeographic zone, including many orchid and bulb species that flower spectacularly after early dry-season fires.

Geology

Kundelungu Plateau is underlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks of the Katanga Supergroup—the same ancient geological unit that contains the Copperbelt mineral deposits of southern DRC and Zambia. The plateau surface is a relict peneplain elevated by tectonic uplift. The Lofoi Falls are formed where the Lofoi River drops off the plateau edge over resistant quartzite bands onto the lower Lufira Valley floor. The Kundelungu Hills escarpment, with its dramatic quartzite ridges and cliffs, creates the most rugged terrain in the park. The plateau's relatively flat surface holds numerous dambos—shallow hydromorphic depressions that are seasonal wetlands of high ecological importance.

Climate And Weather

Kundelungu has a tropical savanna climate with a pronounced dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. The plateau elevation moderates temperatures significantly compared to the surrounding lowlands, with maximum temperatures rarely exceeding 28°C and cool nights year-round, particularly from June to August when temperatures can drop to 5–10°C. Annual rainfall averages 1,200–1,400 millimetres on the plateau. The dry season brings intense fires that burn large areas of the miombo and grassland—a natural and ecologically important process. The wet season transforms the landscape with lush green vegetation and active waterfalls.

Human History

The Kundelungu region falls within the historical territory of the Luba Kingdom, one of central Africa's most sophisticated pre-colonial polities, which developed on the Katanga Plateau between the 15th and 19th centuries. The Luba were known for their elaborate artistic traditions, including wooden masks and spirit figurines, and for their complex governance systems. Belgian colonial administration in Katanga was oriented primarily toward mineral extraction from the Copperbelt, and the interior plateau was less intensively settled. The park area was sparsely inhabited by fishing and hunting communities along the river systems.

Park History

Kundelungu National Park was established in 1970 during the Mobutu era of Zaire. The park has suffered from the chronic underfunding and governance collapse that has affected most DRC protected areas since the 1990s. Infrastructure has deteriorated, poaching has reduced wildlife populations significantly, and the boundary with surrounding agricultural and mining communities is contested. The Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) manages the park with very limited resources. International conservation support has been difficult to mobilise for Kundelungu compared to the higher-profile gorilla and elephant parks in eastern DRC.

Major Trails And Attractions

The Lofoi Falls is the park's primary attraction—at 384 metres, it is one of the highest waterfalls in Africa and a spectacular sight in the wet season. The falls are accessible by a difficult track from the Lubumbashi direction, requiring a 4WD vehicle and good mechanical preparation. Wildlife viewing on the plateau grasslands and around the dambos can be rewarding if conducted with local ranger guides. The Kundelungu escarpment provides dramatic views over the Lufira Valley. The park is a genuine wilderness destination that receives very few visitors and offers an authentic but demanding African adventure experience.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Kundelungu is accessed from Lubumbashi, the capital of Haut-Katanga Province and the DRC's second city, approximately 150 kilometres to the south. The road from Lubumbashi requires a full day's travel with a 4WD vehicle. There is no established visitor infrastructure within the park; travellers must be entirely self-sufficient with camping equipment, food, water, and fuel. ICCN rangers can be hired as guides in Lubumbashi. Security conditions in the region are generally more stable than in eastern DRC but should be verified before travel. Lubumbashi has international flights connecting to Kinshasa, Johannesburg, and other African cities.

Conservation And Sustainability

Kundelungu faces significant conservation challenges: chronic underfunding of the ranger service, encroachment from expanding agriculture and artisanal mining on the park's southeastern margins, and poaching of large mammals including elephants and buffalo. The park has not benefited from the international conservation attention focused on the gorilla and forest parks in eastern DRC. Efforts by ICCN and occasional support from international NGOs have maintained a basic ranger presence but are insufficient to protect the full park area effectively. Strengthening community engagement and developing limited eco-tourism revenue are identified priorities for the park's long-term sustainability.
