About La Mensura-Pilotos

La Mensura-Pilotos National Park is a protected area located in Holguín Province in eastern Cuba, covering approximately 22,850 hectares of montane forest in the Grupo Maniabón highlands. The park encompasses diverse forest ecosystems, wetlands, rivers, and areas of significant natural beauty. It is particularly known for its birdlife, including several Cuban endemic species, and for the Salto de la Mensura, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Cuba. The park forms part of a network of protected areas in eastern Cuba that together safeguard a significant portion of the island's biodiversity hotspots.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park's forests provide habitat for a rich assemblage of Cuban endemic birds, including the Cuban trogon, Cuban tody, Cuban grassquit, Cuban bullfinch, and the endangered Cuban parakeet. The bee hummingbird, the world's smallest bird, has also been recorded in the park. Cuban hutias are present in the wooded areas, and the Cuban solenodon may occur in the more remote, undisturbed forest sections. The rivers and streams support endemic freshwater fauna, including native fish and crayfish species. Insect diversity is high, with numerous endemic butterfly and beetle species.

Flora Ecosystems

The park supports a mosaic of vegetation types including pine forest, broadleaf montane forest, and gallery forest along rivers. The endemic Cuban pine (Pinus cubensis) dominates the upper slopes, while the lower elevations feature semi-deciduous tropical forest with mahogany, cedar, and various endemic tree species. Riparian zones along the rivers support dense, humid forest with tree ferns, heliconias, and orchids. The park contains many endemic plant species, reflecting the biological richness of Cuba's eastern highlands. Bromeliads and epiphytic mosses are particularly abundant in the cooler, moister areas.

Geology

The park's terrain is dominated by Cretaceous and Paleogene volcanic and sedimentary rocks associated with the ancient island arc system that formed the backbone of eastern Cuba. These parent materials have weathered to produce fertile, well-drained soils supporting dense forest growth. The Salto de la Mensura waterfall is formed where a river flows over a resistant volcanic rock escarpment. The broader Grupo Maniabón highland region shows evidence of significant tectonic complexity, with folded and faulted rock units exposing diverse geological formations accessible within the park.

Climate And Weather

La Mensura-Pilotos experiences a tropical montane climate with significant rainfall throughout the year, particularly during the wet season from May to October. Annual precipitation in the montane areas averages over 1,800 millimeters. Temperatures are moderated by altitude, with cooler conditions prevailing in the highland interior of the park. The surrounding lowlands can be very hot and dry during the winter months, creating a strong climatic contrast with the park's interior. Trade winds from the northeast bring moisture to the eastern slopes of the highlands, sustaining the lush forest vegetation.

Human History

The highlands of Holguín Province were inhabited by Taíno communities before the Spanish conquest, who exploited the forests and rivers for food, materials, and spiritual purposes. Following colonization, the region's forests were partially cleared for cattle ranching and subsistence agriculture. The mountains served as refuges for communities resistant to colonial authority. In the modern era, the area around the park has been settled by small-scale farmers who practice traditional agriculture in the buffer zone, creating a landscape mosaic of smallholdings, secondary forest, and remnant primary forest patches.

Park History

La Mensura-Pilotos was designated as a national park to protect the significant biodiversity and watershed values of the Grupo Maniabón highlands. The park is managed by Cuba's CNAP as part of the national system of protected areas. Scientific research within the park has contributed to documentation of the flora and fauna of Cuba's central-eastern highlands, and ongoing monitoring programs track the status of threatened and endemic species. Conservation efforts have focused on reducing the impacts of the surrounding agricultural buffer zone on the park's core forest ecosystems.

Major Trails And Attractions

The principal attraction of the park is the Salto de la Mensura, a dramatic waterfall that plunges into a forested gorge and can be reached by a guided trail through primary forest. Birdwatching along the forest trails offers excellent opportunities to observe endemic Cuban species in a relatively undisturbed natural setting. The park's rivers offer swimming in natural pools below waterfalls. Guided night hikes can reveal nocturnal wildlife, including various bat species and endemic tree frogs. The remote and wild character of the park makes it appealing for visitors seeking off-the-beaten-path nature experiences in Cuba.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessed from the city of Holguín, the provincial capital, via secondary roads through the highland interior. All visits require official permits and the accompaniment of a licensed park ranger or guide. Visitor facilities within the park are basic, limited to ranger stations and marked trails. Accommodation is available in Holguín and in some rural guesthouses in the surrounding communities. Visits to the Salto de la Mensura typically involve a moderate-difficulty hike of several kilometers through hilly forest terrain. It is advisable to arrange visits through established tour operators in Holguín.

Conservation And Sustainability

Key conservation challenges in La Mensura-Pilotos include controlling encroachment by subsistence farmers at the park's boundaries, managing invasive plant species that have established in disturbed areas, and protecting river systems from agricultural runoff and sedimentation. The park's forests provide critical watershed services for downstream communities, and their protection is recognized as a key ecosystem service priority. Conservation education programs targeting surrounding communities aim to build local support for the park and foster sustainable land use in the buffer zone. Wildlife monitoring programs track populations of endemic and threatened species.
