About Fuchun River-Xinan River

Fuchun River-Xinan River National Scenic Area is one of China's designated national-level scenic zones, protecting the joined river corridor where the Fuchun River and its tributary the Xinan River (also known as the Xin'an River) flow through a deeply scenic landscape in Zhejiang Province. This scenic area encompasses gorges, reservoir reaches, riverside hills, and historic riverside communities across a broad linear corridor in western and central Zhejiang. The area is internationally recognized through the ancient Chinese artistic tradition it inspired, most notably the setting for Huang Gongwang's 14th-century masterwork 'Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains,' a painting considered one of the greatest in Chinese landscape art history. National scenic area designation provides comprehensive protection of both natural and cultural heritage values.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The river corridor and surrounding forested hills support wildlife communities typical of subtropical Zhejiang, structured around the dynamic interface between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The Xinan River reservoir system, known as Qiandao Lake, provides extensive deep-water and littoral habitat supporting fish communities and concentrations of waterfowl including ducks, herons, and cormorants during winter and migration periods. Forested hillsides above the reservoir and river corridor harbor wild boar, small deer, civets, and diverse bird communities. The large water body of the reservoir creates local climatic effects that influence terrestrial biodiversity in adjacent hillside habitats. Freshwater fish assemblages in the river system include both native species and introduced taxa that have established in the reservoir environment.

Flora Ecosystems

Vegetation across the scenic area encompasses subtropical evergreen and mixed broadleaf forest on hillsides, with bamboo groves prevalent in valley bottoms and on lower slopes throughout the corridor. The reservoir shoreline of Qiandao Lake supports mosaic habitats including submerged and emergent aquatic vegetation, scrub on exposed hillsides during low water periods, and riparian forest at stable margins. Traditional tea cultivation has shaped hillside vegetation over centuries, with terraced tea gardens remaining an iconic landscape feature of the region. Hillside forest includes camphor, various oaks, and subtropical flowering species that provide seasonal color in spring and autumn. Old growth remnants in less-accessible areas support larger trees and greater structural complexity than managed landscapes.

Geology

The geological framework of the Fuchun River-Xinan River scenic area features Mesozoic volcanic rocks, granites, and sedimentary sequences that produce the rugged ridge-and-valley landscape of western Zhejiang. The Xinan River gorge section cuts through resistant bedrock, creating dramatic cliffs and exposed rock faces that are among the scenic highlights of the area. The Qiandao Lake reservoir, created by the Xin'an River Dam completed in 1959, submerged a historic valley landscape and exposed geological sections along its shores. Alluvial terraces along the rivers record a history of repeated flood events and channel migration over millennia. The region's volcanic geology yields soils of varying fertility, supporting the characteristic tea-growing conditions for which nearby areas such as Keemun are historically famous.

Climate And Weather

The scenic area experiences a subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasonal patterns. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures frequently exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) and high humidity driven by monsoon moisture. Annual precipitation is substantial, typically between 1,400 and 1,800 millimetres (55 to 71 inches), with the main wet season from April through September incorporating both the plum rain season and typhoon-influenced rainfall events. Winters are mild and often misty, with occasional cold periods but rarely severe frost. The river valleys frequently experience early morning mist and fog, particularly in autumn and winter, creating the atmospheric hazy conditions that have made the Fuchun River landscape a subject of artistic fascination for centuries.

Human History

The Fuchun and Xinan River valleys have sustained human civilization for over three thousand years, with archaeological evidence of prehistoric settlement followed by prosperous historical communities engaged in river trade, silk production, and agriculture. The region was part of the ancient Yue culture territory and later became an important economic corridor in the Yangtze delta hinterland. The flooding of the Qiandao Lake basin in 1959 for the reservoir displaced approximately 290,000 residents from dozens of ancient villages and towns, including the historic town of He Cheng and numerous culturally significant sites. The submerged settlements and their cultural heritage remain subjects of historical documentation and underwater archaeology efforts. Traditional crafts, including silk weaving and tea production, shaped community life throughout the historical period.

Park History

The national scenic area designation for Fuchun River-Xinan River represents China's recognition of this corridor as a site of exceptional combined natural and cultural significance. The scenic area concept in China encompasses both landscape protection and cultural heritage management, reflecting the inseparability of natural scenery and human historical presence in classic Chinese landscape aesthetics. Management has evolved alongside the maturation of China's protected area system, with increasing emphasis on integrated conservation planning across the river corridor. The construction of Qiandao Lake has shaped the modern landscape and visitor experience within parts of the scenic area, with the reservoir itself becoming a major tourism asset while also altering the original river ecosystem and valley character.

Major Trails And Attractions

The scenic area's primary attractions include river and reservoir cruises on the Fuchun River and Qiandao Lake, which provide the traditional way of experiencing the landscape. The 'Thousand Island Lake' of Qiandao Lake, with its 1,078 lake islands of varying sizes, is a major domestic tourism destination. Historic riverside villages and ancient architecture along the Fuchun River corridor are cultural highlights. Viewpoints along the river gorge sections offer dramatic scenery of forested cliffs and flowing water. Hiking trails on hillsides above the river provide elevated perspectives over the scenic landscapes. Seasonal activities include spring tea picking experiences, fishing festivals, and autumn foliage viewing walks in the surrounding forest.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The scenic area is accessible from Hangzhou via expressway and from Shanghai via high-speed rail connections to Hangzhou, with onward transport by road or ferry. Qiandao Lake (Chunan County) is the main tourism hub, offering extensive hotel and resort accommodation, boat excursion services, and visitor centers with interpretive displays. Multiple ferry routes connect islands and scenic points within the lake reservoir. The Fuchun River corridor is served by smaller guesthouses and river village accommodation. Entry fees apply at designated scenic spots throughout the area. Transportation options within the scenic area include both road and boat, with boat excursions being the preferred visitor experience. Tourism infrastructure is well developed relative to many Chinese scenic areas given the site's long history as a major domestic destination.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation challenges in the Fuchun River-Xinan River scenic area include managing the significant visitor pressure on the Qiandao Lake section, maintaining water quality in the reservoir that supplies drinking water to Hangzhou city, and protecting remaining natural forest from development pressure. Integrated management of the river corridor involves coordination among multiple county governments, provincial authorities, and national-level conservation agencies. Water quality monitoring for the Xin'an River is a high priority given the reservoir's role in urban water supply. Efforts to restore native vegetation on degraded hillsides reduce erosion and sedimentation. The cultural heritage dimension, including documentation of submerged historical sites, adds complexity to conservation planning and requires ongoing interdisciplinary engagement.
