About Selkirk

Selkirk Provincial Park is a popular day-use and camping park located on the north shore of Lake Erie near Port Dover in southern Ontario. The park provides recreation opportunities while protecting valuable Lake Erie shoreline habitat in one of Ontario's most developed regions.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, and numerous bird species. Lake Erie's warm waters support walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and other species. Annual precipitation averages 950mm. Lake Erie's shallow waters warm quickly in summer, reaching comfortable swimming temperatures. The lake can experience sudden wind-driven wave conditions. Fall is pleasant with autumn colors in October.

Human History

The Lake Erie region is traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy and Anishinaabe peoples. The lake and its tributaries provided abundant fishing, particularly for species like walleye and lake sturgeon. The mild climate and fertile lands supported substantial populations. The shoreline served as part of travel and trade networks. European colonization displaced Indigenous communities, though many maintain cultural connections to the Lake Erie region and advocate for environmental protection.

Park History

The Lake Erie shoreline was historically forested and home to Indigenous peoples before European settlement in the 18th-19th centuries led to land clearing for agriculture. The region became one of Ontario's most intensively farmed areas. Port Dover developed as a fishing port and commercial center. The park area was preserved to provide public access to Lake Erie's beaches as private ownership dominated the shoreline. The park has served as a popular recreation destination since its establishment.
