Saulteaux Natural Area represents boreal forest diversity featuring upland pine and mixed aspen and white spruce forest alongside moister areas with black spruce/Labrador tea/feathermoss forest. The site serves as a research and study site for the University of Alberta, forming part of a cluster of three natural areas (Hondo, Saulteaux, and Otauwau) within the Lesser Slave River watershed. The name derives from the Saulteaux people, members of the Ojibwa nation traditionally associated with the Great Lakes region in Ontario, who likely migrated westward seeking improved hunting and fur trading opportunities. The Saulteaux River name was approved in 1906.
