About Sable Island

Sable Island National Park Reserve protects a unique crescent-shaped sandbar 300 km offshore in the Atlantic. Famous for its wild horses, massive grey seal colony, and as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic' with over 350 shipwrecks.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Wild horses (descendants of 18th-century survivors) number around 500. Over 400,000 grey seals breed here - the world's largest colony. Rare Ipswich sparrow breeds only here. Roseate terns and other seabirds.

Geology

A 42-km-long sand island constantly reshaped by wind and waves. Extensive dunes, freshwater ponds, and one of the world's largest grey seal breeding colonies. No trees or shrubs - only grasses and low vegetation.

Maritime oceanic climate with persistent fog, strong winds, and heavy seas. Weather can change rapidly.

Human History

Mi'kmaq knew of the island but rarely visited the dangerous offshore waters.

Park History

Hundreds of ships wrecked on the treacherous shoals. A lifesaving station operated from 1801 to 1958. Weather and research stations continue. Became a national park reserve in 2013.

Major Trails And Attractions

Guided walks to see horses and seals, birdwatching, photography, experiencing one of Earth's most remote places.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Access only by authorized charter flights from Halifax (~5 hours round trip including island time). Parks Canada controls all access. June through September when flights operate. Weather frequently causes delays. All visits require Parks Canada authorization and use of approved tour operators. Very expensive (~$2,000+). No facilities on island - day trips only. Bring everything you need.
