About North Lake

North Lake Provincial Park is located on northeastern Prince Edward Island's coast overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence near the community known as the 'Tuna Capital of the World' due to historic bluefin tuna fisheries.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The coastal location supports shorebirds like sanderlings, plovers, and sandpipers during migration. Harbor seals are occasionally observed while the Gulf waters historically supported large bluefin tuna populations.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal plant communities adapted to wind and salt spray include American beachgrass, beach pea, seaside goldenrod, and dusty miller stabilizing sand. Small patches of stunted white spruce and balsam fir occur where shelter allows.

Geology

The park sits on PEI's characteristic red sandstone formed from Permian period deposits approximately 250-300 million years ago. Coastal dunes form where prevailing winds accumulate sand above the high-tide line.

Climate And Weather

Maritime climate influenced by the Gulf brings cool summers (18-23°C) and moderate winters (-3 to -8°C) with persistent winds shaping vegetation and creating challenging coastal conditions.

Human History

Used by Mi'kmaq peoples for fishing and gathering for thousands of years. European settlement brought farming and fishing communities. The area gained fame in mid-20th century as a premier bluefin tuna fishing destination.

Park History

Established to protect coastal habitats and provide public access to PEI's scenic north shore beaches while maintaining a low-key atmosphere for quieter beach experiences.

Major Trails And Attractions

Beach and coastal walking opportunities offer Gulf of St. Lawrence views. Adjacent North Lake Harbor allows visitors to observe fishing vessels and learn about maritime heritage while the area provides excellent birdwatching.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Located in eastern PEI accessible via Route 16, approximately 80km northeast of Charlottetown. Day-use facilities include parking and basic amenities with camping available in nearby communities.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation focuses on protecting fragile coastal dune systems from erosion and trampling. Dune vegetation stabilizes sand and management includes education about staying on designated paths.
