About Medway Lakes Wilderness Area
One of Nova Scotia's largest wilderness areas, protecting a mix of hardwood and mixed forest hills, conifer flats, wetlands, numerous waterways, and over thirty lakes. Straddling the headwaters of the Medway and Mersey rivers, the wilderness area protects water quality in two of western Nova Scotia's largest watersheds. Supports wildlife sensitive to disturbance, including Blandings turtles, American martens, mainland moose, and various bird species. Contains old-growth stands of sugar maple, yellow birch, white pine, and hemlock. Designated as a Special Trout Management Area for native brook trout conservation with a retains remnant Atlantic salmon population.
