About Matthews Crossing

Features rolling terrain and the steep banks of the Pembina River with wetlands in depressions. Mainly aspen forest on uplands with mixed aspen-balsam poplar on the river bank and near wetlands. The crossing served Indigenous peoples and packers before European settlement. A post office operated from 1913-1923 under postmaster M. H. Matthews. Around 1920, a ferry began operation staffed by returned World War I veterans before relocating downstream to Sangudo.
