About Mitchell River
Mitchell River National Park is a remote 403,000-hectare protected area in the northern Kimberley, accessible only by charter aircraft, protecting one of Australia's most spectacular and untouched river systems. The Mitchell River flows through ancient gorge country, dropping over the spectacular four-tiered Mitchell Falls (Punamii-unpuu in the Wunambal language) before reaching the Timor Sea coast. The waterfalls are among the most spectacular in Australia, with water cascading 80 metres through ancient sandstone gorges surrounded by tropical monsoon forest and rugged Kimberley wilderness. The park is operated as a joint management area with Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners, who guide visitors through their ancient country.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Mitchell River's intact wilderness supports an exceptional fauna community. The endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus) maintains populations here. Rock wallabies navigate the sandstone gorge walls. Freshwater crocodiles inhabit the river pools. The Gouldian finch — one of the world's most beautiful birds and critically endangered — uses suitable savanna habitats in the park. Saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) inhabit the lower river and coastal section. The marine waters at the river mouth support dugongs, sea turtles, and diverse coastal wildlife. The park's fish fauna includes barramundi, sawfish, and numerous endemic Kimberley species.
Flora Ecosystems
The park encompasses multiple vegetation communities spanning from tropical monsoon forest in sheltered gorges to open savanna woodland on plateau surfaces. The Mitchell Falls area supports riparian gallery forest with native figs and paperbarks. The plateau is covered in spinifex grassland with Darwin woollybutt and Darwin stringybark eucalypts. The coast supports mangrove communities in sheltered inlets. The overall flora exceeds 750 recorded species, with many endemic or restricted Kimberley species. Livistona palms line permanent waterways in gorge environments.
Geology
The park's dramatic landscape is carved from the ancient Kimberley Craton — Proterozoic sedimentary rocks approximately 1.0–1.8 billion years old, among the world's best-preserved ancient rock sequences. The Mitchell Falls cascade over these ancient sandstones, with horizontal bedding planes creating the distinctive stepped falls structure. The gorge walls display the extraordinary colour palette of weathered Kimberley sandstone — reds, oranges, and purples depending on mineral composition.
Climate And Weather
Extreme tropical monsoon climate. The wet season (November–April) transforms the landscape with monsoonal rainfall. The dry season (May–October) allows access by chartered aircraft. The falls reduce significantly by late dry season. June–August offers the most pleasant conditions. Summer heat before the wet (October) can exceed 40°C.
Human History
Mitchell River National Park is at the heart of Wunambal Gaambera country. Wunambal Gaambera people have maintained continuous occupation for over 40,000 years. The park contains hundreds of Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) and Wandjina rock art sites among the world's most significant rock art assemblages. The falls — Punamii-unpuu — feature in traditional stories and law.
Park History
Mitchell River National Park was proclaimed in 1979 and developed as a co-management arrangement with Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners. The park is operated as a fee-for-entry ecotourism destination with limited visitor numbers.
Major Trails And Attractions
Mitchell Falls (Punamii-unpuu) — a 9 km return walk through ancient sandstone country. The walk passes Wandjina rock art sites interpreted by Wunambal Gaambera rangers. Helicopter scenic flights over the falls. Wildlife watching in savanna and at waterholes.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Accessible only by charter aircraft to Mitchell Plateau airstrip. Basic camping at plateau camp. All supplies brought in. Charter flights from Broome, Kununurra, or Derby. DBCA entry fees apply. Dry season only (May–October).
Conservation And Sustainability
The advancing cane toad invasion from the east is the most immediate threat to the park's intact fauna. Invasive weeds including rubber vine threaten savanna vegetation. The Wunambal Gaambera Healthy Country Plan integrates traditional knowledge with scientific conservation.
