About Woko

Woko National Park is a remote escarpment and rainforest park in the Manning Valley hinterland of New South Wales, located in the ranges north of Dungog between the Hunter and Manning Valleys. Covering approximately 16,595 hectares, the park protects significant areas of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, and dry sclerophyll woodland on the ranges above the Manning River. The park contributes to the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area and provides habitat connectivity across the northern Hunter hinterland.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Woko National Park supports diverse rainforest and wet forest wildlife. The superb lyrebird is present in the moist forest gullies. Yellow-bellied gliders inhabit old-growth forest. The platypus occurs in permanent streams. Diverse rainforest birds are present. The park's remote character contributes to its conservation value for sensitive species.

Flora Ecosystems

Subtropical and warm temperate rainforest occupies the sheltered gullies and moist slopes. Tall wet sclerophyll forest with flooded gum and blue gum covers the mid slopes. Dry sclerophyll woodland occupies drier ridges. The diversity of communities reflects the topographic and moisture gradient.

Geology

The park is underlain by Permian sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks of the Hunter Valley sequence. The escarpment terrain above the Manning Valley creates the diversity of habitats.

Climate And Weather

Warm temperate to subtropical climate. Annual rainfall approximately 1,200 to 1,600 millimetres. Warm summers, mild winters.

Human History

The Biripi and Worimi peoples are the traditional custodians of the Manning Valley hinterland.

Woko National Park was established as part of the Gondwana Rainforests conservation network for the northern Hunter hinterland.

Remote walking through rainforest and escarpment forest. Birdwatching for lyrebirds and rainforest species.
