About Wambina

Wambina State Conservation Area is a protected area in the southern tablelands of New South Wales, located in the Snowy Mountains foothills between Cooma and Bombala. Covering approximately 8,450 hectares, the conservation area protects significant areas of dry sclerophyll woodland and forest on the granite and metamorphic terrain of the southern tablelands. The area contributes to the conservation of tableland woodland communities that have been substantially cleared for agriculture.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Wambina supports tableland woodland wildlife. Eastern grey kangaroos and wallaroos are common. Gang-gang cockatoos and glossy black-cockatoos inhabit the forest. The superb parrot may visit in season. Eastern grey kangaroos graze at forest margins. Diverse woodland birds typical of the southern tablelands are present.

Flora Ecosystems

Dry sclerophyll woodland dominated by ribbon gum, brittle gum, and scribbly gum on the granite terrain. Understorey communities include native grasses, everlastings, and diverse shrubs. Rocky outcrops support specialist plant communities.

Geology

Underlain by Silurian and Devonian granite and metamorphic rocks of the Lachlan Fold Belt. The granite terrain creates the characteristic shallow soils of the southern tablelands.

Climate And Weather

Cool temperate climate at approximately 700 to 900 metres elevation. Annual rainfall approximately 600 to 750 millimetres. Cold winters with frosts and occasional snow. Mild summers.

Human History

The Ngarigo people are the traditional custodians of the southern tablelands.

Park History

Wambina State Conservation Area was established to protect remnant dry sclerophyll woodland of the southern tablelands.

Major Trails And Attractions
