About Tuross

Tuross Head National Park is a small coastal park on the far south coast of New South Wales, located near the town of Tuross Head in the Eurobodalla district south of Batemans Bay. Covering approximately 254 hectares, the park protects coastal heath, lagoon, and beach environments around the Tuross Lake estuary. The park forms part of the broader coastal conservation mosaic of the Eurobodalla region, contributing to the protection of coastal habitats for diverse wildlife.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park supports coastal wildlife including diverse waterbirds on Tuross Lake. Eastern grey kangaroos and swamp wallabies use the heath and woodland. The coastal heath supports diverse small birds. The park's lagoon provides habitat for wading birds and migratory shorebirds.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal heath with banksias, tea-trees, and diverse wildflowers dominates the sandy headlands. Swamp communities fringe the lake margins. Coastal scrub and she-oak woodland occupy sheltered positions.

Geology

Coastal Quaternary sediments forming the beach ridges, dune systems, and lagoon of the Tuross Lake estuary. The underlying granite and metamorphic bedrock of the Lachlan Fold Belt is exposed on the rocky headlands.

Climate And Weather

Temperate coastal climate. Annual rainfall approximately 850 millimetres. Warm summers, mild winters.

Human History

The Yuin people are the traditional custodians of the far south coast. The Tuross Lake estuary was an important resource area.

Tuross Head National Park was established to protect the coastal heath and estuary environment.

Walking tracks through coastal heath. Swimming and fishing in Tuross Lake. Birdwatching at the estuary.

Basic visitor facilities. Access from Tuross Head Road. Moruya provides visitor services. Approximately 310 kilometres south of Sydney. A national parks pass applies.

Weed control on the coastal headlands. Protecting shorebird nesting areas from disturbance.
