About Timbarra
Timbarra National Park is a remote highland park in the granite belt country of the New England Tableland in northern New South Wales, located in the ranges near the Queensland border west of the Clarence Valley. Covering approximately 16,645 hectares, the park protects significant areas of dry sclerophyll forest, wet sclerophyll forest, and heath on the elevated granite terrain of the northern tablelands. The park contributes to the conservation of the granite belt flora and fauna of the New England region.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Timbarra National Park supports tableland and granite belt wildlife. Eastern grey kangaroos and common wombats are common. The park provides habitat for diverse woodland birds typical of the New England Tableland. Glossy black-cockatoos and gang-gang cockatoos inhabit the forest. Rock wallabies utilise the granite outcrops. The platypus occurs in permanent streams.
Flora Ecosystems
Dry sclerophyll forest with stringybark, scribbly gum, and smooth-barked apple covers the granite slopes. Heath communities with diverse banksias and peas occupy rocky outcrops. Wet sclerophyll forest occurs in sheltered gullies. The granite terrain creates diverse habitats with specialist plant communities.
Geology
The park is underlain by Permian granite of the New England Batholith. Weathering of the granite creates the characteristic boulder outcrops and sandy soils of the granite belt. The elevated tablelands position creates the cooler conditions of the highland flora.
Climate And Weather
Cool subtropical to warm temperate climate. Annual rainfall approximately 900 to 1,200 millimetres. Cool winters, warm summers. The elevated position creates cooler conditions than the surrounding lowlands.
Human History
The Bundjalung people are the traditional custodians of the northern tablelands. The granite ranges were significant in the cultural landscape.
