About Popran
Popran National Park is a sandstone bushland park on the Central Coast of New South Wales, located in the ranges behind Gosford and the upper Hawkesbury River. Covering approximately 5,700 hectares, the park protects significant areas of Hawkesbury Sandstone heath and dry sclerophyll forest in the urban fringe of the Central Coast region. The park provides important ecological connectivity in the Central Coast-Hawkesbury landscape and offers accessible bushland recreation for the rapidly growing Central Coast population.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Popran National Park supports wildlife typical of the Central Coast sandstone system. Koalas are present and contribute to the regional population. Yellow-tailed black-cockatoos and glossy black-cockatoos are commonly observed. Eastern grey kangaroos and common wallaroos are abundant. Rock wallabies inhabit suitable rocky terrain. Diverse woodland birds occupy the heath and woodland. Echidnas are common.
Flora Ecosystems
Hawkesbury Sandstone heath with banksias, hakeas, scribbly gums, and diverse wildflowers dominates the sandy ridges. Dry sclerophyll forest with bloodwood and smooth-barked apple covers the slopes. Wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest elements occur in the sheltered creek gullies. Spring wildflower displays are outstanding from August to November.
Geology
The park is underlain by Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone forming the characteristic ridge and valley terrain of the Central Coast hinterland. The creek systems have carved valleys into the sandstone plateau.

Warm temperate coastal climate. Annual rainfall approximately 1,100 millimetres. Summers warm, winters mild. Spring peak for wildflowers.
Human History
The Darkinjung people are the traditional custodians of the Central Coast hinterland. The sandstone country provided diverse resources. European settlement accelerated on the Central Coast from the late 20th century.
