About Nightcap

Nightcap National Park is a significant subtropical rainforest park in the far north of New South Wales, forming part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area in the Tweed and Richmond Valleys. Covering approximately 8,078 hectares, the park encompasses the Nightcap Range, the northern caldera wall of the ancient Tweed shield volcano, protecting extraordinary subtropical rainforest, warm temperate rainforest, and wet sclerophyll forest. The park is renowned as one of the finest and most accessible examples of subtropical rainforest in Australia, famous for its Minyon Falls and the celebrity walk of the Nightcap Track.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Nightcap National Park supports exceptional subtropical rainforest biodiversity. The threatened Albert's lyrebird inhabits the dense forest. Koalas are present in the ecotone woodland. The park provides habitat for diverse threatened bat species, pademelons, ringtail possums, and feathertail gliders. The Wompoo fruit-dove, regent bowerbird, and numerous rainforest-specialist birds inhabit the subtropical canopy. The platypus occurs in permanent streams. The park's connectivity to Border Ranges and other Gondwana Rainforest parks maintains wildlife corridors across the northern rivers.

Flora Ecosystems

Subtropical rainforest dominates the sheltered gullies and slopes, featuring diverse vine forests with hoop pine, bangalow palm, strangler figs, and numerous laurel species on fertile basaltic soils. Warm temperate rainforest with coachwood occurs on cooler aspects. Tall wet sclerophyll forest with blue gum and flooded gum forms the forest margins. The spectacular Minyon Falls passes through lush subtropical rainforest. The rainforest is among the most diverse in Australia, with hundreds of species.

Geology

Nightcap National Park forms part of the northern caldera wall of the ancient Tweed shield volcano. The basaltic rocks and associated soils create the fertile conditions supporting the subtropical rainforest. The Minyon Falls descend over basaltic rock formations. The volcanic landscape creates the topographic diversity that supports the extraordinary biodiversity of the Gondwana Rainforests.

Climate And Weather

The park has a warm subtropical climate with very high rainfall. Annual rainfall on the ranges may exceed 2,000 millimetres, with summer-dominant rainfall. Summers are warm and humid, typically 24 to 30°C. Winters are mild. The high rainfall maintains the subtropical rainforest communities.

Human History

The Bundjalung people are the traditional custodians of the northern rivers. The rainforest ranges were significant cultural landscapes with important spiritual sites. Minyon Falls is a sacred site. European timber operations impacted the surrounding forests in the early 20th century.

Park History

Nightcap National Park was gazetted in 1983, following a significant community campaign to protect the Terania Creek rainforest from logging. The campaign became a landmark in Australian environmental history. The park's inclusion in the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area followed in 1986.

Major Trails And Attractions

Minyon Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls in northern NSW at 100 metres, is the park's iconic attraction, accessible by both a rim walk and a challenging descent to the pool base. The Nightcap Track provides a multi-day walk through subtropical rainforest. Rummery Park camping area provides a base for exploration. Birdwatching is excellent throughout.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Rummery Park and Minyon Grass camping areas provide facilities. The park is accessed from Lismore via Nimbin and from Bangalow. Lismore and Byron Bay provide visitor services. The park is approximately 780 kilometres north of Sydney. A national parks pass applies.

Conservation And Sustainability

Lantana control is the primary ongoing management challenge. The park's World Heritage values require vigilant protection of the rainforest from weed invasion. Managing visitor numbers at Minyon Falls while protecting the sensitive gorge vegetation requires careful site management.
