About Montague Island
Montague Island Nature Reserve is a significant offshore island reserve located approximately 9 kilometres east of Narooma on the far south coast of New South Wales. The island, known as Baranguba in the Yuin language, covers approximately 81 hectares and rises to 25 metres above sea level. The island is renowned as one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries on the NSW coast, supporting Australia's southernmost breeding colony of little penguins, a large Australian fur seal haul-out, and the largest known breeding colony of short-tailed shearwaters in New South Wales. The island's lighthouse, built in 1881, is heritage listed.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Montague Island's marine and terrestrial wildlife is extraordinary. The island supports approximately 12,000 little penguins nesting in burrows across the island. Short-tailed shearwaters nest in enormous numbers during the breeding season from October to April. Australian fur seals haul out on the rocky platforms, with over 1,500 animals recorded. Great white sharks aggregate offshore to feed on the seal colony. Humpback and southern right whales pass close to the island during migration. Diverse seabird species including crested terns, silver gulls, and pied cormorants breed on the island.
Flora Ecosystems
The island's vegetation has been significantly modified by past land use but supports coastal saltbush, pigface, and native grasses on the rocky terrain. Dense tussock grass provides critical nesting cover for little penguins. Restoration plantings of indigenous coastal species have been undertaken to improve penguin nesting habitat. The surrounding waters support productive kelp forests on the rocky reef systems.
Geology
Montague Island is an exposure of Devonian granite that forms a rocky, wave-washed platform rising from the continental shelf. The granite has been eroded into the characteristic rounded forms typical of coastal granite outcrops. The island sits at the intersection of the warm East Australian Current and cooler southern waters, contributing to the exceptional marine productivity around the island.
Climate And Weather
The island has a temperate maritime climate with relatively mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures are moderated by sea breezes, typically 18 to 24°C. Winters are mild, typically 12 to 18°C. Rainfall is moderate. Seas around the island can be rough, making landing dependent on weather conditions.
Human History
The island of Baranguba holds deep significance to the Yuin people as a sacred place. The lighthouse was established in 1881 and staffed until automation in 1986. The lighthouse keepers' cottages and associated buildings are heritage listed as examples of 19th-century lighthouse station architecture.
Park History
Montague Island was declared a nature reserve to protect its extraordinary wildlife values. Access to the island is restricted and managed through guided tours run by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to protect the wildlife from disturbance.
Major Trails And Attractions
Guided tours to Montague Island operate from Narooma, including daytime and evening tours to observe little penguins returning to their burrows at dusk. Snorkelling and diving around the island provide encounters with marine life including playful seals. The lighthouse precinct provides heritage interpretation. Whale watching from tour boats around the island is possible during migration season.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Access to Montague Island is by boat from Narooma, with guided tours operated by licensed operators. Visitors cannot independently access the island. Narooma provides all visitor services and is approximately 330 kilometres south of Sydney. Advanced booking for tours is recommended. Entry fees apply through the tour operators.
Conservation And Sustainability
Managing visitor access to protect wildlife from disturbance is the primary management challenge. Penguin and seabird monitoring programs track population trends. Weed control and revegetation improve penguin nesting habitat. The introduced vegetation from the farming era continues to be managed. Marine protected area zoning protects the surrounding reef from fishing pressure.
