About Herberton Range

Herberton Range National Park is located near Herberton on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, protecting a section of the volcanic range and associated wet tropical and dry vegetation communities. The park is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and contributes to the conservation of this globally significant biodiversity region. The Herberton area is historically significant as a former silver and tin mining district, and the park preserves natural vegetation on the range adjacent to this historical mining landscape.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Herberton Range National Park supports wildlife typical of the Atherton Tablelands, including the Wet Tropics endemic species characteristic of the World Heritage Area. Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos may inhabit suitable rainforest areas within the park. Diverse bird communities reflect the park's position within the Wet Tropics, with species including various kingfishers, parrots, and honeyeaters. The vegetation mosaic supports diverse reptiles and frog communities.

Flora Ecosystems

The vegetation of Herberton Range National Park transitions between the wet tropical rainforest of the eastern tablelands slopes and drier woodland communities toward the west. This ecotonal vegetation includes elements of both the wet and dry tropics and supports distinctive plant communities. The diverse flora reflects the ecological gradient between the wet and dry tropics that characterises the western Atherton Tablelands.

Geology

The Herberton Range is part of the volcanic basalt country of the Atherton Tablelands, with the basalt formed by ancient lava flows. The Herberton area has a complex geological history that includes not only volcanic basalt but also the granitic and metamorphic rocks that made the area attractive to tin and silver miners in the late nineteenth century.

Climate And Weather

The park experiences the subtropical to tropical climate of the Atherton Tablelands, with the western position creating somewhat drier conditions than the eastern tablelands. The wet season from November to April brings the majority of rainfall. The dry season from May to October offers the most comfortable visiting conditions.

Human History

The Herberton area has significant European history as one of Queensland's most important tin and silver mining districts, active from the 1880s. The Herberton Historical Village preserves much of this heritage. Aboriginal peoples inhabited the tablelands prior to European arrival. The mining history has left significant marks on the Herberton landscape.

Park History

Herberton Range National Park was established to protect natural vegetation on the range adjacent to the Herberton township and historical mining area. The park contributes to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Major Trails And Attractions

The park offers natural experiences complementing the historical and cultural attractions of the Herberton area. The Herberton Historical Village is one of the best heritage attractions on the Atherton Tablelands. Wildlife watching and walking in the diverse vegetation are the primary park activities.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park has limited visitor facilities. Herberton provides services and is approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Atherton. The Atherton Tablelands are accessible from Cairns in approximately 1.5 hours.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation management focuses on protecting the Wet Tropics World Heritage values of the park, controlling invasive weeds, and maintaining appropriate ecological processes.
