About Greenmount

Greenmount National Park is a compact reserve on the Darling Scarp, adjacent to the Perth Hills town of Greenmount, offering accessible jarrah and wandoo woodland walking and panoramic views across the Swan Coastal Plain. The park sits at the base of the Darling Range escarpment, providing an easily accessible green space for Perth's eastern suburbs. Seasonal wildflowers, birdwatching, and the dramatic views from elevated points make it a popular destination for day visitors. The park connects with adjacent Darling Range reserves, contributing to a green corridor that supports wildlife movement between urban areas and the deeper forests of the range.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Greenmount National Park supports native wildlife typical of the Darling Scarp woodlands. Western grey kangaroos graze in forest clearings, while brushtail possums and ringtail possums inhabit the woodland canopy. Birdwatching is excellent — western rosellas, red-capped parrots, carnaby's black cockatoos, and numerous honeyeater species are regularly observed. Short-beaked echidnas forage through leaf litter and disturbed ground. Bobtail skinks and various lizards are common in open areas. The woodland's connectivity to adjacent forest reserves allows wildlife movement and supports more mobile species.

Flora Ecosystems

Jarrah-wandoo woodland characterises the park's vegetation. Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) grows on the richer lateritic soils, while wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) dominates on drier, shallower soils. Granite outcrops within the park support different plant communities with specialised flora adapted to thin soils. The understorey features native grasses, shrubs from the Proteaceae and Myrtaceae families, and seasonal wildflowers including orchids and native peas that bloom from August through October.

Geology

Greenmount sits on the Darling Plateau at the edge of the Darling Scarp — a fault-controlled escarpment separating the ancient Yilgarn Craton plateau from the younger Swan Coastal Plain. The underlying Archaean granites and gneisses are deeply weathered to lateritic soils. The scarp edge creates the dramatic west-facing topography that provides the park's views across the coastal plain. Granite outcrops emerge through the weathered profile on ridge crests.

Climate And Weather

Modified Mediterranean climate with higher rainfall than the Perth coast due to orographic effects. Annual rainfall 700–800 mm. Winters cool and wet; summers warm with temperatures moderated by the elevated position. Spring wildflowers peak August–October. Fire risk high in summer.

Human History

Within Whadjuk Noongar country. The scarp environment was important in traditional seasonal movement between coast and inland. European settlement expanded from Perth from the 1830s; the Greenmount area developed as market gardens and orchards on the scarp slopes.

Park History

Greenmount National Park was established to protect representative jarrah-wandoo woodland on the Darling Scarp, providing accessible bushland for Perth's eastern suburbs. Management addresses urban-edge challenges including invasive weeds and visitor impacts.

Major Trails And Attractions

Scenic lookout points with views across the Swan Coastal Plain. Forest walks through jarrah-wandoo woodland. Spring wildflowers August–October. Birdwatching year-round. Accessible from Perth eastern suburbs.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Accessible 30 km east of Perth via Great Eastern Highway. Carparking and walking tracks. Greenmount township nearby. Parks entry fees may apply. Open year-round.

Conservation And Sustainability

Urban-edge management challenges include invasive weeds, Phytophthora dieback, and visitor impacts. Collaboration with adjacent landowners and councils maintains green corridor connectivity.
