About Coal River Gorge
Coal River Gorge Nature Reserve near Richmond in southeastern Tasmania protects a spectacular landscape of sandstone bluffs and dry sclerophyll woodland, with threatened grassland flora communities. The Coal River Gorge is a dramatically scenic feature in the agricultural landscape of the Coal River Valley, where the river has cut through ancient sandstone and mudstone to create steep-sided gorges with colourful cliff faces. The reserve protects rare native grassland and woodland communities that have been largely eliminated from the surrounding agricultural landscape through clearing and grazing.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The reserve's dry sclerophyll woodland and native grassland support fauna typical of southeastern Tasmania's dry country. The endangered swift parrot uses the eucalypt woodland during breeding. Eastern barred bandicoots are present in suitable habitat. The gorge cliffs provide nesting sites for peregrine falcons and other raptors. Reptiles including blue-tongued lizards and tiger snakes inhabit the sunny grassland and woodland margins. The sandstone cliff environment supports specialised invertebrates adapted to the rocky microhabitats.
Flora Ecosystems
The native grassland communities within the reserve are of high conservation significance, representing some of the best-preserved examples of the Themeda triandra (kangaroo grass) and Poa grassland that once covered much of the Coal River Valley before European agricultural clearing. The dry sclerophyll woodland of blue gum and peppermint eucalypts is underlain by diverse native shrubs and wildflowers. The sandstone cliffs support specialist plant communities adapted to the rocky, lime-enriched substrate of the Permian mudstones and sandstones.
Geology
Coal River Gorge exposes Permian sedimentary rocks approximately 260 million years old, including sandstones, mudstones, and coal measures deposited in an ancient inland sea. The gorge has been carved by the Coal River through these relatively soft sedimentary rocks, creating dramatic cliff faces of ochre, red, and cream-coloured stone. The sandstone bluffs are particularly striking, with horizontal bedding planes and cross-bedding structures recording the ancient depositional environment.
Climate And Weather
The Coal River Valley has one of the driest, sunniest climates in Tasmania, receiving only around 550 millimetres of annual rainfall in the valley floor. This Mediterranean-like climate, with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, supports the distinctive dry grassland and woodland communities. The gorge cliffs can trap heat and create locally warm conditions on sunny days.
Human History
The Coal River Valley was traditional Mumirimina Palawa country. European settlement of the Richmond and Coal River Valley area began in the 1820s, and the fertile valley soils were rapidly converted to grain farming and later viticulture. The gorge itself, being difficult to farm, retained its natural vegetation while the surrounding agricultural landscape was transformed.
Park History
Coal River Gorge Nature Reserve was established to protect the rare native grassland communities and scenic geological features of the gorge. The reserve is one of the few protected areas specifically addressing the conservation of native grassland communities in southeastern Tasmania.
Major Trails And Attractions
The gorge provides scenic walking opportunities along the river and cliff-top tracks, with the colourful sandstone bluffs and river views the primary scenic attractions. Spring wildflower displays in the native grassland are botanically rewarding.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The reserve is located near Richmond in the Coal River Valley, approximately 25 kilometres northeast of Hobart. Basic visitor access is provided. The Coal River Valley is Tasmania's premier wine region, with numerous cellar doors and restaurants nearby.
Conservation And Sustainability
Conservation focuses on protecting the rare native grassland communities from invasive species and inappropriate fire regimes. African lovegrass and other invasive grasses threaten native grassland composition. The peregrine falcon nesting sites require protection from disturbance. Water quality in the Coal River is monitored as part of the broader catchment management for the Coal River Valley wine region.
