About Margahovit

Margahovit State Sanctuary protects approximately 2,800 hectares of mountain forest and meadow near the village of Margahovit in Lori Province, northern Armenia. The sanctuary preserves native deciduous forest growing on the moist northern slopes of the Bazum Range, representing well-developed Caucasian mixed forest in a region that receives higher rainfall than most of Armenia. The area is known for its scenic beauty and diverse forest ecosystems.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The forests support brown bears, wolves, wild boar, roe deer, and lynx. The dense woodland canopy and deadwood provide habitat for various woodpecker species and forest owls. Forest streams support brown trout and diverse aquatic invertebrates. The meadow-forest ecotone attracts diverse butterfly communities. Various bat species roost in hollow veteran trees.

Flora Ecosystems

Oriental beech and Caucasian hornbeam dominate the forest canopy with significant contributions from Georgian oak, maple, and lime. The understory is well-developed with hazel, dogwood, and viburnum. The ground flora includes woodland wildflowers, ferns, and various orchid species. Mountain meadows above the forest support diverse grassland communities. Over 400 plant species have been documented.

Geology

The sanctuary occupies northern slopes of the Bazum Range composed of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Elevations range from 1,500 to 2,300 meters. The terrain is moderately steep with some cliff faces and rocky outcrops. Springs emerge along geological boundaries. The volcanic soils are relatively fertile, supporting productive forest growth.

Climate And Weather

The northern Lori position receives higher moisture than much of Armenia, with annual precipitation of 700 to 900 millimeters. Average temperatures range from minus 4 degrees in January to 17 degrees in July. The moist conditions support lush forest development. Snow cover persists for 4 months at higher elevations.

Human History

The village of Margahovit and surrounding communities have utilized the forests for centuries. The region was an important center of medieval Armenian culture with numerous monasteries. Soviet-era forestry included management for timber production. The energy crisis caused significant unauthorized forest cutting in surrounding areas.

Park History

The sanctuary was established to protect well-preserved Caucasian mixed forest from further degradation. The designation restricts logging and heavy grazing while allowing limited traditional use. Scientific surveys documented high biodiversity values justifying strict protection.

Major Trails And Attractions

Forest trails offer peaceful walking through diverse deciduous woodland with seasonal interest from spring wildflowers through autumn colors. Mountain meadows above the forest provide panoramic views. Medieval monastery ruins in the vicinity add cultural interest.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The sanctuary is accessible from Vanadzor approximately 40 kilometers to the south via the village of Margahovit. No formal visitor facilities exist. Accommodation in Vanadzor or rural guesthouses. Unpaved roads provide vehicle access to the forest margins.

Conservation And Sustainability

Illegal logging and overgrazing remain the primary threats. Limited enforcement resources challenge effective management. The connectivity between this sanctuary and other forested areas is important for large mammal movements. Climate change may affect forest composition through increased drought stress during summer months.
